Interior Design Advice When You Need It

Sometimes you don’t need an interior designer to take the wheel. You need an experienced one in the passenger seat. Our virtual interior design consultation is for clients steering their own project. Whether you’re rethinking a whole home or stuck on a single room, you can run your questions and ideas past an interior designer.

Each online interior design consultation is a video call with Veronica or Aggie. We bring more than 40 years of combined experience designing homes across San Francisco and the Bay Area, from Parnassus Heights, Cole Valley and the Outer Sunset to Oakland and the Berkeley Hills, and give you clear, candid guidance on the decision in front of you.

If you’d like us to lead a renovation, new construction or full-home furnishings project, that is our Full-Service Interior Design.

The paint sheen, the height of the sconce, the wall you’re not sure about taking down. Bring the questions, and leave knowing what to do.

How Virtual Design Consultation Works

Step One:Choose your format

Select the consultation format that fits where you are in your project, then pick a date. All sessions are held online, by video call.

We offer two options: a longer session for clients weighing several decisions, or a shorter one when you need to get one specific thing right.

Comprehensive Design Consultation

→ 1 hour, $750

For multiple decisions across a single project. Common areas where we help:

  • Perspective on refining your project’s overall scope
  • Space planning consultation and furniture layout guidance
  • Paint color consultation for a cohesive palette
  • Feedback on a single room, kitchen and bathroom design, materials, or furnishings
  • Support with styling ideas
  • Tips for hiring contractors and project management

Focused Design Consultation

→ 30 minutes, $325

For the single decision in front of you. Common areas where we help:

  • Guidance on a specific design decision: paint color, layout, or furniture placement
  • Feedback on material or furnishing direction
  • Clarity on scope or next steps
  • Insights on a particular challenge you’re facing

Step Two:Share your project

Once your session is booked, we send a questionnaire and ask for whatever gives us context: photos, floor plans, paint chips, product links. Please send them at least one day before your session. The more we know going in, the further we get in our time together.

Step Three:Meet with your interior designer

During your online interior design consultation, we work through your questions in real time, with the photos and plans you sent open in front of us. You leave with the guidance you need and clear next steps. The same day, you receive a video recording and a full transcript of our conversation, yours to return to as you need.

What Clients Say

Words from recent clients across the Bay Area and beyond

“We uploaded documents before the meeting and got such excellent advice for how to optimize the spaces for our wishes. The different options got sketched out on the fly, and everything got recorded so we can review it later. Now we have a clear target and can start planning the projects to get there.”
“They came with many creative ideas for storage and how to frame our bed. We just loved the experience! Now we have a direction and know they are there to guide us. We’re looking forward to signing up for more sessions.”

Virtual Design Consultation FAQs

What’s the difference between Interior Design Consulting and Full-Service Interior Design?

Interior Design Consulting is a single online session for clients who want a designer’s advice on specific decisions.

Full-Service Interior Design is the service in which we lead every phase of your project, from the first concept through installation. The simplest way to think about it: with Interior Design Consulting, you steer the project and we advise; with Full-Service Interior Design, we steer the project for you.

For a sense of how long a Full-Service project typically takes, see our interior design project timelines.

If you’re planning a renovation, new construction or a whole-home project, Full-Service Interior Design is the right fit.

What can we cover in an Interior Design Consulting session?

Anything you’d like an experienced interior designer’s perspective on.

Common questions clients bring: which paint sheen to use, whether to open up a wall, how high to hang the chandelier, whether the sectional will fit, how a house they’re considering would actually live and where its layout could be reconfigured, how to sequence renovation decisions, and how to coordinate with a contractor.

For more on planning a renovation before you bring in trades, see What to Know Before Starting a Home Renovation.

Will I receive drawings, design boards, or shopping lists afterward?

Interior Design Consulting is real-time guidance and does not include design boards, drawings, renderings or procurement. We may sketch during the call, and those sketches stay in your recording. If you want the full set, along with our leadership of the project from concept through installation, Full-Service Interior Design is the better fit.

Can I book more than one consulting session for the same project?

Yes. Some clients book again as new questions come up on the same project, and others come back for a new project. Each session runs for its booked length, so if you need more time, book another.

If you’re working out the bigger picture of your style before drilling into decisions, How to Discover Your Ideal Design Aesthetic is a useful starting place.

Do I need to be in San Francisco to book an interior design consultation?

No. Consultations are held online, so our virtual interior design services reach clients well beyond San Francisco. We’ve held sessions with clients in Oakland and as far away as the Netherlands.

Can I book a consultation about a San Francisco home I’m considering buying?

Yes, and it’s one of the most useful times to bring in an interior designer. We review the floor plan, walkthrough video and listing photos before the session, then talk through how the house would work for your life, where the layout could be reconfigured, and what’s realistic given the existing structure.

If you’re weighing how a project on the home would unfold, What an Interior Designer Does During Construction gives a sense of what’s involved beyond cosmetic work.

Can I hire an interior designer for one room?

Yes. A single room is reason enough to reach out, even when the rest of the house can wait. To talk through the layout, materials or contractor questions, book a consulting session. If the room needs furnishing and you’d rather we design it for you, Design Day gives you a furniture layout and a sourced furnishing plan to order from. And if the room is a kitchen or bathroom, or needs construction of any kind, Full-Service Interior Design takes it from concept through installation.

How much does an interior design consultation cost?

The 30-minute Focused Design Consultation is $325 and the 1-hour Comprehensive Design Consultation is $750. Each session has a flat interior design consultation fee, which includes the same-day video recording and transcript.

How do I book, and can I reschedule?

Select a session at the bottom of this page, choose a date and time, and pay. The calendar opens six weeks ahead.

You can reschedule your session as needed; we ask that you do so at least 24 hours before it begins. Consultation sessions are non-refundable, and booking your session confirms you’ve read and agreed to these terms.
