1940’s ranch bungalow undergoes thoughtful expansion

The clients outgrew their family home—a cherished 1940s ranch bungalow in a tree-lined street in Sacramento. Their vision was to elevate the residence from a 2-bedroom, 1-bath home into a more spacious 3-bedroom, 2.5-bathroom abode that could accompany them as they age gracefully into their golden years.

Fulfilling this vision involved a thoughtful expansion of the east end of the home, stretching into the deep lot with a 789-square-foot addition that includes a generously appointed primary suite, an enlarged kitchen, and a powder room that complements the new gathering spaces. The addition shifted the activities within the space, facilitating a reconfiguration of the existing home to serve different functions for the family. The existing bath was converted into a convenient laundry room, the den into a large full bathroom, and the office into the new dining room.

The seamless flow of the open plan reveals the interconnected kitchen, dining, and living room, designed to facilitate entertaining on a grand scale. At the heart of the home, the kitchen is three times its original size and boasts a large island with additional seating, offering a unique space for the clients to enjoy the company of their grandchildren. The primary suite, strategically positioned on the opposite end of the existing bedrooms, offers a serene retreat with expansive windows, a sliding door framing views of the vast backyard, and a generous bathroom with a spacious walk-in shower and double vanity.

Embracing the mid-century modern aesthetic that characterizes the home, the details reflect an open and airy atmosphere anchored by warm, wide-plank oak flooring, red oak millwork, cool gray tiles, and matte black fixtures.

This beloved residence, having undergone a prior remodel in 1970, has a history of transformation. The once-small garage, repurposed into a study haven for the children, adds a layer of nostalgia to the home's evolving narrative.
