A modernized, traditional Edwardian flat

A young and creative family of three aspired to nurture a deeper connection with their traditional Edwardian flat. The inspiration for this project was to infuse it with vibrancy and a vivid interplay of patterns and colors while modernizing the kitchen, laundry, and bathroom.

Partitions that had long kept the kitchen, living, and dining areas apart were dismantled, and a 15-foot beam was added to support the new opening. The reorganization of space placed the living room off the kitchen, bathing the surroundings with the eastern morning sun. Removing the walls framed the view of the dining room from the foyer, drawing the eye to the gathering spaces at the rear of the home.

Expanding the modest kitchen involved increasing countertop space and minimizing upper cabinets, emphasizing unobstructed sight lines. A breakfast bar was incorporated, and the laundry space became a separate area. As these areas converged, they formed the ideal setting for family activities such as creative art projects, extended homework sessions, and the cozy ambiance of intimate gatherings.

The bathroom, situated off the hallway, required upgrades as it became the owner's and guests' main lavatory. A neighboring closet was captured, and the entrance was re-oriented, creating two distinctive spaces — One became a tucked away showering area, and the other a focal point dedicated to the vanity, reminiscent of a powder room.

The 100-year-old home laid bare the history woven within the walls—25-foot continuous span redwood joists, traditional lath and plaster coved ceilings, and the veiled remnants of gas lines that once kindled the glow of antique light fixtures, making the entire home an open and welcoming gathering space.
