Claremont

Cozy emerald green bedroom with a view into ensuite bath of zellige white tiles

A Moroccan-hammam-inspired guest suite

In the charming Claremont neighborhood of Berkeley, a vibrant family of four sought a serene escape within their home. Drawing inspiration from the intricate details of the Moroccan hammams, their vision was to convert a sunlit playroom and office into a multi-purpose guest suite, perfect for hosting family and friends.

Nestled in the hillside, their three-story home fans out onto the slopes, creating layers of interesting geometries within each room. The angled walls were folded into the design to create an entryway vestibule that casts intimacy upon those who cross the threshold.

Stepping past the soft glow of the vestibule, the bedroom continues the thread of tranquility with diffused light washing over the rich dark green walls and walnut-stained floors. This conjures a sense of moodiness that is balanced by the striking contrast of the ensuite bath.

Peering into the ensuite bath, glazed zellige tiles adorn the walls from floor to ceiling, creating a shimmer of patterns that dance harmoniously with the dimensionally patterned cement tiles underfoot. The enameled cast iron sink and arched mirror add sculptural touches, while terracotta pendants provide organic texture.

Color, contour, and light are rooted into the space, offering the family and guests a respite within arm’s reach.
